Overview of the Seminar Program:

1st Presentation:  Concrete Classifications and Considerations

Gordon Leaman will give a presentation on the pitfalls and potential issues regarding prescriptive and performance specifications.  The presentation is based on Gordon’s experience with reviewing and writing technical specifications as well as consulting to resolve specification issues. 

2nd Presentation:  Mix Design Creation and Troubleshooting Mix Design Complications and Project Specifications

 This presentation will focus on the covering the basics of concrete mix design creation, trouble shooting typical specification challenges ie. shrinkage requirements, finishability, strength requirements and heat of hydration, along with meeting typical specification requirements.

3rd Presentation:  Changes to CSA 283 - Qualification Code for Concrete Testing Laboratories

 This presentation will be on CSA A283-2019 - Qualification Code for Concrete Testing Laboratories.  Discussion will be based upon the changes to the code in 2019 that came into effect January 1, 2020. Gordon will also present CCIL’s activities as the certifying agent on behalf of CSA.

4th Presentation:  Summary of the Different Certifications offered by the ACI Manitoba Chapter

 This presentation will provide a summay of the different certifications available through the ACI Manitoba Chapter, why these certifications are relevant to the work done here in the Province, and discuss potential additions to this list.

Bio for Presenters:

1st Presenter: Mr. Gordon Leaman, P.Eng.

Gordon is a Senior Materials Engineer with over 30 years of experience with Stantec Consulting Ltd. in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Gordon managed one of the largest private concrete testing and research laboratories in Eastern Canada and provides consulting to the other offices of Stantec in Canada and the United States. He has been involved in numerous laboratory and field investigations on alkali aggregate reactivity, concrete durability, and high performance concrete. Gordon has been involved in the concrete mixture development for the Hebron gravity-based structure, specialty consulting to the Hibernia gravity-based structure, and completed the laboratory investigations associated with all mixture designs for the Confederation Bridge, the largest bridge over ice covered water.

For the past 20 years he has been a member of the technical committee for CSA Standards A23.1/A23.2 serving as first vice chair for the executive committee for the past and current publication cycle. Gordon is also chair of the technical committee for CSA Standard A283, Qualification Code for Concrete Testing Laboratories. He is past president of the board of directors, Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories, and aci Atlantic Chapter.

2nd Presenter: Mr. Nicholas Legal, P.Eng.

Nicholas is the Quality Assurance Manager for Lafarge in Winnipeg, and has been employed with Lafarge Canada Inc since 2009.  He has worked in some capacity or other since that time within the Quality Control department within the Ready Mix Division, and has also gained some experience with Aggregate, Pipe, and Precast products. 

3rd Presenter: Mr. Gordon Leaman, P.Eng.

4th Presenter: Mr. Guillaume Beauce, P.Eng.

Guillaume is the Field Supervisor with Stantec's Materials Testing Services, and the Certification Lead for the ACI Manitoba Chapter.  Gullaume took over looking after the various certification sessions for the Chapter in 2018.
